Many inspectors answer newspaper or magazine advertisements that claim they can become rich by taking their online course, or by purchasing their particular franchise. Beware, these courses “teach the test”, and allow individuals with no prior construction knowledge to meet the minimum requirements to become home inspectors. These “inspectors” typically have no construction background, and are not familiar with the building processes, building products, or innovations in the construction craft.
A homebuyers due diligence should include a telephone interview with the potential inspectors. During which, ask the inspector, or their representative, what the inspectors work history was PRIOR to becoming an inspector. If they are honest, you’ll be very entertained by the answers.
